Our story

ka·hu

noun · Hawaiian

  1. A guardian, a keeper.
  2. One entrusted with the care of something cherished.
  3. An app that keeps watch over your household’s money. Inspired by a small dog who keeps watch over ours.

We borrowed the word with affection, as a small dedication rather than a claim to it.

Meet the guardian.
He came first.

Kahu began as something for our own home, and its name came from Otis. It’s growing into something we hope can help yours.

A note from the family building it

It started with
our little family.

I’m Luka. I started Kahu for my wife and me, to make our own finances easier to understand and manage. I write the code; she’s our product owner and our most faithful QA.

Our dog inspired the name and the mascot. Kahu means guardian, which is why a small one looks out from the corner of the app.

It’s just the two of us behind Kahu. We’re building something we want to use ourselves, and sharing it with people who might find it useful too.

That’s why the local app will stay free. Paid services should make Kahu more convenient, never take away your ability to manage your own money.

Off the clock

A few more of Otis.

He has more good sides than we have room for. Tap the pile for the next one.
